Art Cunanan’s pursuit of his passion began as a commercial artist for a leading newspaper in Manila, and later as a layout artist for several advertising companies.
Born in the Philippines and educated at the University of Santo Tomas in Manila, in 1976, Art immigrated to Canada and continued his quest for recognition in the Arts. Since his Canadian introduction in 1984, Cunanan’s work has been widely and vigorously accepted. Commissioned by numerous companies; including the Royal Insurance and Bradley Museum his work has been reproduced by Carlton Cards for their Canadian Artists Collection, as well as Hospital for Sick Children’s Christmas Card.
In 1989, Art decided to devote all of his attention to painting full-time. He started  teaching  watercolour at  workshops for various
art groups and fine art schools. The tremendous response elicited by his decision to conduct workshops has provided him with a means of enjoyment while he imparts his knowledge of watercolor to others.
Best known for his effective and sophisticated use of light, his watercolors sparkle with freshness and spontaneity. Art makes the viewer stop and appreciate the everyday beauty surrounding us; that is so often taken for granted. Art recently began painting in acrylics and has had much success with the transition.
Art Cunanan is an elected member of the Canadian Society of Painters in Watercolor and one of the founding members of The Philippine Artists’ Group in North America. He is one of Canada’s foremost and sought after art teachers. Art recently returned from Dubai, where he was invited by a family to privately teach their children.
His works can be found in private and corporate collections in Canada, the United States, Europe, Hong Kong, UAE, and the Philippines.
